Stories that Inspire: Podcast “De la A a la Z”
By Paula Galvan and Victoria Rode
Anyone who has ever heard Juan Carlos Ojam speak about his passion for intellectual property has probably had the opportunity to enjoy some of the many anecdotes and lessons he has to share. These are stories with a more personal touch, enriched by the experiences that human interactions in the profession have provided him over the years.
That’s how Juan Carlos came up with the idea of developing a podcast that would allow us to share with clients and colleagues some of the meaningful experiences that, over the years, this profession we are so passionate about, has allowed us to enjoy.
These experiences are what make intellectual property such a special métier, a discipline that places us at the forefront of so many innovations that go beyond our daily work. They are also stories we are proud to be a part of, stories with that touch of novelty that makes them so unique and motivates us to share them with our loved ones.
In the months that followed, his idea began to take shape. As we brought in colleagues and friends who had also lived these experiences, we discovered that they shared the same desire to tell their stories. It was essential to build a team, and Sasha Mandakovic Falconi, Joana De Mattos Siqueira, and Ricardo Enrique Antequera eagerly embraced Juan Carlos’s vision and joined the project without hesitation. To ensure the highest production quality, we partnered with MarcaSur Magazine as a strategic ally for the dissemination and amplification of the podcast. Thus, with the guest lineup in place, our first podcast was born: “De la A a la Z: A Disruptive, Innovative, and Everyday Look of Intellectual Property.”
The heart of this project lies in the fact that it’s not just another podcast about intellectual property; it’s a truly unique offering in the Spanish-speaking market. This podcast goes beyond the brands, patents, and intangible assets that, if you’re here, you likely already know well. But if we’re talking about the core of the idea, who better to explain it than Juan Carlos himself, who expressed it as follows:
“The podcast was born out of my desire to show a different side of those who work in intellectual property. I always wanted to offer a more human perspective, a conversation that goes beyond what typically appears on a résumé, on social media, or in a press article. The goal is to create a lasting legacy through stories for those who are interested in listening.”
The disruptive nature doesn’t come from the format (we know there are many podcasts about intellectual property and related topics these days), but from our intent to delve into the more personal side of our guests. We innovate by putting the people behind intellectual property advancements front and center, revealing how their personal experiences influence both their work and the field as a whole.
And it’s precisely this everyday life aspect that makes “De la A a la Z” unique. In each episode, recorded in different corners of the world, we dive into life stories that are rarely told, stories that go beyond the value of intellectual property assets to focus on those who create, protect, and promote them. Each episode is an opportunity to explore the experiences, passions, and challenges of people who, beyond their professional roles, are human beings with unique stories that have brought them to where they are today—stories that deserve to be told.
The hosts of the series—Juan Carlos Ojam, Sasha Mandakovic Falconi, Joana De Mattos Siqueira, and Ricardo Enrique Antequera—guide us through sincere and revealing conversations with lawyers, judges, inventors, and entrepreneurs, all of them key figures and references in the field of intellectual property.
MarcaSur Magazine launched its Spotify channel in early July 2024, and that’s when we premiered the first episode of our podcast. The guest was Nicolás Muñoz, an Ecuadorian legaltech lawyer with a very particular vision of the profession, the industry, and life.
At the end of August 2024, we released the second episode of the series, in which Juan Carlos Ojam and Joana De Mattos Siqueira had the privilege of speaking with Peter Dirk Siemsen, an iconic figure in Brazilian intellectual property and one of the founding partners of ASIPI (Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property). His story is a perfect witness to how personal and professional lives intertwine, showing how his experiences have shaped his vision and success in the field of IP. We invite you to listen to this conversation here and discover a more personal side of Peter Dirk Siemsen, at 95 years of age.
This is just the beginning. In the upcoming episodes of this first season, we’ll be speaking with Daniela Rojas, Lorenzo Litta, Hugo R. Gómez Apac, Guadalupe García Crespo, Fernanda Magalhães, and Elisabeth Siemsen. Each of them will bring their unique stories, offering new perspectives and experiences that will enrich our understanding of intellectual property.
“De la A a la Z” is much more than just a podcast; it’s our way of connecting with the intellectual property community and all those interested in gaining a deeper understanding of this fascinating world. We’re not just looking to inform but also to inspire, reflect, and connect. Every story we share is another piece of the complex puzzle that is intellectual property.
