Uruguay Joins the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)

By Rosario Mauro

We are pleased to inform that on June 11, 2024, the Senate of the Uruguayan Parliament approved Uruguay’s accession to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), completing its approval by both chambers of the Uruguayan Parliament.

The accession to the PCT was approved with a reservation to Chapter II (“International Preliminary Examination”) as stipulated in Article 64(1) of the Treaty.

The next steps are for the Executive Power to enact the bill and for its publication in the Official Gazette to complete the legislative ratification process of the PCT. Following this, necessary adjustments will be made to align local practices with PCT standards, a process that will take several months.

We will closely monitor developments on this matter and keep you informed of any significant updates and relevant dates.
